The 1999 United States Open Championship was the 99th U.S. Open. The event was held from June 17-20 at Pinehurst Resort, Course No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open and third major championship with a 15-foot par putt on the final hole to defeat Phil Mickelson by one stroke. Stewart would not get a chance to defend his title in 2000 as he died little more than four months later, in a plane crash.
